The Story of Sif

The Golden-Haired Goddess
In Norse mythology, Sif is known for her magnificent golden hair. She is Thor's wife and a goddess often associated with the earth, fertility, and fields of golden grain.
In the version of her story that inspired Sif Salon, Sif lovingly cares for her long golden hair, rinsing it in crystal springs and spreading it beneath the sun to dry. When Loki cuts it away, Sif is devastated. She covers her head and turns to Thor for comfort, and he reminds her that her beauty was never held in her hair.
Still furious over what was done to her, Thor demands that Loki make it right. Loki turns to the dwarves known as the sons of Ivaldi, master craftsmen, who create new hair from strands of pure gold. Once placed upon Sif’s head, the golden strands take root and grow as naturally as her own.
Her loss becomes the beginning of something extraordinary. The same chain of events also leads to the creation of several of the gods’ greatest treasures, including Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir.
Why Sif?
I didn’t choose the name simply because Sif was known for beautiful golden hair. I was drawn to what her story came to represent for me: feminine identity, masculine support, resilience, and the possibility of transformation.
Hair can carry so much. It can reflect who we are, where we have been, and how we want to feel as we move into a new season of ourselves. Sometimes we want to preserve what feels familiar. Sometimes we are ready to reclaim something that has been lost. And sometimes we’re becoming someone new.
Sif’s story isn’t about returning to exactly what was there before. What was restored became something different, something living, luminous, and uniquely hers.
